Last week my daughter and I had the chance to go visit my mom and dad for my birthday and fathers day. Usually every year my father and I take a couple of days to fish to celebrate both. We did not go this time since the winds were really bad and there were other things going on. We already have a rain check planned in a couple of weeks. Never fear though New Angler friends, I still have a good short story.
While visiting and talking about the fishing we wish we were doing my dad showed me this picture which I must say is freaking awesome. While fishing in shallow water flats surrounded by some deep cuts and holes, my dad caught this monster red on fairly light tackle using a medium Zara-Spook on top water. For any of you that have not been fortunate enough to learn how to “walk the dog” and catch reds on top-water, I highly suggest you do. There is nothing quite like it. If you ask anybody that knows me, they will tell you that I border on obsession. I will say that it makes the fish look even more impressive due to the fact that dad is pretty skinny! This fish was 26 pounds and 42 inches long. This was a great early father’s day gift for a bad ass fisherman and an all around great dad.

Wow, What a fish!! I know that excitement of topwater catch. I’ve caught a few reds top water with a Mann’s Baby 1-minus. And don’t forget that floating hot pink Mirrolure for trout. But, I just don’t have the finesse that you or your dad does. Gotta have my shrimp and popping cork! BTW hope you gave him that pictured framed for Father’s Day!!
That really is a nice red. I’ve never been so lucky as to catch one that big. Thats one of those Louisiana redfish. Maybe I need to be a little more patient and stick to top water for more than 5 minutes at a time.
